Austin Gomber , who pitched for the 2014 New York-Penn League champions as a member of the State College Spikes, became the 53rd player in Spikes history to take the Road to the Show, presented by HRI, Inc., when he debuted for the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.
Gomber, a left-hander whom the Cardinals originally drafted out of Florida Atlantic University in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB Draft, threw three innings of shutout ball against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Winter Garden, Florida native allowed just one walk and struck out two batters during his time on the mound.

In his time with the Spikes, Gomber went 2-2 with a 2.30 ERA over 11 starts, and played a key role in the club's run to the NYPL title with 14 consecutive scoreless innings to finish the season. The southpaw went on to share Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors with Alex Reyes in 2015 after going 15-3 with a 2.65 ERA and 140 strikeouts to 34 walks over 135 innings for Single-A Peoria. Gomber then delivered a solid 2016 season as he split time between Advanced-A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield before earning a berth in the Arizona Fall League with the Glendale Desert Dogs.
Gomber delivered a 10-7 record and 3.34 ERA with 140 strikeouts over 143 innings for Springfield in 2017, and made nine starts for Triple-A Memphis before his big league debut in 2018. The lefty is the fourth Spikes alum to reach the majors this year following Cardinals reliever Jordan Hicks and Pirates pitchers Nick Kingham and Clay Holmes.
Fans can see more future major league stars begin their Road to the Show, presented by HRI, Inc., when the Spikes hit the field for 39 nights of fun, affordable family entertainment this summer.
