Steve Lombardozzi and Mike Aviles collected three hits each, and Cal Towey's two-run double in the fouth inning put the New Orleans Baby Cakes in front to stay in a 6-4 win over the Iowa Cubs on Wednesday night.
The teams traded first-inning runs on a Brandon Barnes sacrifice fly in the top of the frame, answered by Jacob Hannemann's first Triple-A home run in the home half.
Towey's double in the fourth gave New Orleans a lead it would not relinquish, and marked the 17th time in 18 starts Towey has reached base safely. Peter Mooney added a single to score Towey, pushing the Baby Cakes' lead to 4-1.
Jemile Weeks brought the I-Cubs within one with a two-run double of his own in the sixth, driving 'Cakes starter Scott Copeland from the game. Brian Ellington was able to strand Weeks at third base to preserve the lead.
After New Orleans tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, Chris Dominguez homered off Javy Guerra in the eighth. But Drew Steckenrider, named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team earlier in the day, worked around a one-out single in the ninth to close out his team-leading fifth save.
Copeland (5-7) struck out eight and surrendered three runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings to get the win.
Aaron Brooks (4-6) went five innings, allowing four runs and nine hits, to take the loss.
The 'Cakes look to salvage a split of the four-game series in Thursday's finale, starting at 12:05 p.m.
