Minor League Baseball announced the International League’s Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards For July 7 – 13 prior to entering the All-Start Break. Norfolk Tides catcher Samuel Basallo was named Player of the Week while Lehigh Valley’s Mick Abel was named Pitcher of the Week. Basallo becomes the first Tide to win a weekly award this season. This also marks his fourth career weekly award, with all four being earned at each full-season level.
SAMUEL BASALLO, 20, played in five-of-six games for the Tides from July 8 – 13. He hit .389 (7-for-18) with three runs, three doubles, three homers, 10 RBI and three walks while slashing .500/1.056/1.556. He led the league slugging percentage, and OPS during the week, while also tying for the lead in RBI and extra-base hits. Overall, Basallo has played 62 games and is hitting .264 (55-for-208) with 40 runs, 11 doubles, 19 home runs, 48 RBI, 39 walks, and is slashing .383/.591/.974.
On July 8, he went 3-for-4, was a triple-shy of the cycle, knocked four RBI and drew a walk. He hit his second home run on Friday, July 11. Basallo finished the week on Sunday, July 13 going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBI. At the All-Star Break, Basallo ranks among International League leaders in home runs (T-2nd), slugging percentage (3rd), and OPS (4th). He has the second-best average exit velocity (94.0 MPH), only trailing Worcester’s Roman Anthony (95.0 MPH).
MLB Pipeline and Baseball America ranks Basallo as the top prospect in the Orioles organization, with both putting him in the Top 100 of MLB (#10 by MLB Pipeline, #11 by Baseball America). This follows his 2024 Eastern League season where he won the league Top MLB Prospect Award and was a Future’s Game Selection. Basallo was also the Top MLB Prospect MVP of the Carolina League in 2023.
