BayBears bats go quiet after first-inning runs

Carpenter records first quality start for BayBears in August

MOBILE, Ala. (August 16, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, plated a pair of first-inning runs but were edged 3-2 by the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in the series opener Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
With runners on second and third with one out in the first inning, Jose Rojas hit a sacrifice fly and Zach Gibbons followed with an RBI single. Despite grabbing an early 2-0 lead, the BayBears (56-64 overall, 26-25 second half) went scoreless for the following eight innings.
Jacksonville (56-64, 26-24) responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second. K.C. Serna hit an RBI double and scored on Alex Yarbrough's single. The next inning, Braxton Lee led off with a single and scored on a John Norwood sacrifice fly.
Tyler Carpenter (2-6) recorded the first quality start for the BayBears in August. He gave up three runs, one earned, on five hits with five strikeouts in six innings pitched. Abel De Los Santos and Damien Magnifico combined to toss three scoreless, hitless innings of relief.
However, Chris Mazza (3-7) pitched six scoreless frames after giving up the two first-inning runs. Daniel Schlereth, a former BayBear, notched a six-out save in his first appearance at Hank Aaron Stadium since 2009.
The BayBears continue the five-game home series against Jacksonville Thursday at 6:35 p.m. CT. Right-handed pitcher Grayson Long (7-6, 2.88 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against southpaw Matt Tomshaw (11-6, 3.61 ERA) for the Jumbo Shrimp.
