BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (June 9, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, were kept off the board in a 1-0 loss to the Birmingham Barons in the series opener Friday night at Regions Field.
Jake Jewell (3-4) took the loss, despite his team-high fourth quality start. Jewell gave up just one run in 6 2/3 innings pitched and worked out of bases loaded jams in the fifth and sixth.
Spencer Adams (4-6) went the distance for Birmingham (22-38), throwing the second complete-game shutout in his career. He allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out eight. Adams faced the minimum in eight of the nine innings.
The BayBears (26-35) collected two of their three hits in the fourth inning but failed to score. Adams recorded 12 consecutive outs after Tim Arakawa singled to begin the sixth.
Mason Robbins went 3-for-4 and scored the only run for the Barons. Birmingham left 11 runners on base, but Cleuluis Rondon's RBI single in the fifth provided all the run support needed.
