PENSACOLA, Fla. (June 13, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, led 1-0 through seven innings but dropped the series opener to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 2-1 Wednesday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Jason Alexander pitched six scoreless innings and gave up just one hit in his Double-A debut. He walked two batters and recorded six strikeouts. Alexander retired 11 straight batters to finish his start and left in line for the win, following a Zach Gibbons home run in the seventh to break a scoreless tie.
However, the Blue Wahoos (28-36) came back with a pair of runs against Greg Mahle (3-1). Chris Okey hit a game-tying homer with two outs in the eighth inning. Shed Long led off the ninth with a double and scored the winning run two batters later on Brian O'Grady 's sacrifice fly.
The BayBears (35-29) pitching staff had combined for 16 consecutive scoreless innings before the Okey home run. It was also the first walk-off win for an opponent against Mobile this season.
The BayBears continue the five-game road series against Pensacola Thursday at 6:35 p.m. CDT. Right-handed pitcher Luis Pena (2-4, 4.27 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Daniel Wright (2-4, 5.05 ERA) for the Blue Wahoos.
