PENSACOLA, Fla. (April 21, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, plated five runs in the fifth inning but could not overcome an early eight-run deficit in an 8-5 loss to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Sunday evening at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Trailing 8-0 after the first four innings, the BayBears (6-10) snapped a 16-inning scoreless streak with a five-run top of the fifth. Brendon Sanger got the scoring started with a two-run homer, his second of the season and second against Pensacola (12-5). Jahmai Jones plated a run with a two-out single, increasing his hit streak to seven consecutive games. Brandon Marsh followed by hitting his first Double-A home run to left field.
Zac Ryan and Ryan Clark kept the Blue Wahoos off the board for four innings out of the bullpen. However, Jesus Castillo (0-3) was tagged for a career-high eight earned runs on 10 hits in a four-inning start. Pensacola scored five runs in bottom of the third, and Castillo gave up home runs to Jaylin Davis and Ernie De La Trinidad. De La Trinidad has five hits in the first two games of the series.
Jorge Alcala (4-0) earned his fourth win in as many starts. Despite the tumultuous fifth, Alcala set down 12 of the first 13 batters he faced over the first four innings and struck out eight batters, one shy of his career-high. The Blue Wahoos fanned 16 Mobile batters after recording 18 strikeouts in the series opener.
The BayBears continue the five-game road series against Pensacola Monday at 6:35 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Jose Rodriguez (0-1, 8.59 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Brusdar Graterol (1-0, 0.52 ERA) for the Blue Wahoos.
