MOBILE, Ala. (July 18, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, surged ahead 2-1 after four innings but dropped the series opener 4-2 to the Chattanooga Lookouts Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Jose Rodriguez gave up just two runs, one earned, on four hits over 5 2/3 innings pitched. He left with the game tied and did not factor in the decision.
After falling behind 1-0 on a throwing error in the fourth, the BayBears (48-45 overall, 11-14 second half) jumped in front in the bottom of the frame. Sherman Johnson plated two runs with a double off the wall in right field.
However, Mobile's lead was short-lived. Chattanooga (44-51, 8-18) tied the game in the fifth and took the lead on Brian Navarreto's home run off Daniel Procopio (0-2) to begin the seventh. Navarreto added a run of insurance with an RBI infield single the following inning.
Andrew Vasquez (1-0) struck out five batters in two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first win. Ryne Harper recorded a strikeout and stranded two baserunners in the ninth for his sixth save.
Despite having runners in scoring position in five of the nine innings, the BayBears left nine men on base and went just 1-for-11 with RISP.
The BayBears continue the five-game home series against the Lookouts Thursday at 6:35 p.m. CDT. Right-handed pitcher Jason Alexander (0-3, 3.71 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Omar Bencomo (5-4, 3.42 ERA).
