BayBears fall behind early, drop second straight to Lookouts

Despite bullpen's strong night, early runs too much to overcome

MOBILE, Ala. (May 3, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, gave up three runs in the first two innings and lost 4-1 to the Chattanooga Lookouts Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
After allowing the early runs, the BayBears (12-14) cut the deficit to 3-1 when Wade Wass scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. However, Chattanooga (15-12) got the run back on LaMonte Wade Jr's third homer of the season leading off in the sixth, one of his three hits in the game.
Mobile starter Jose Rodriguez (1-3) lasted just 3 1/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. He gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits. A trio of relievers combined to hold the Lookouts to just one run on four hits over the final 5 2/3 innings. Jeremy Rhoades tossed two scoreless frames, and he has not allowed a run in his last 11 2/3 innings pitched.
Kohl Stewart (3-1) earned his third win of the season, surrendering just one run on five hits with five strikeouts over five innings. Tyler Jay and Zack Jones limited the BayBears to two hits in four scoreless innings of relief. Jones earned his first save of the year.
Taylor Ward went 0-for-4, putting an end to his 14-game on-base streak.
The BayBears continue the five-game home series against Chattanooga Friday at 7:05 p.m. CDT. Right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning (1-0, 3.46 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Zach Littell (0-3, 5.87 ERA) for the Lookouts.
