Four-run fourth not enough to erase early seven-run deficit

MOBILE, Ala. (July 19, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, nearly erased an early seven-run deficit but fell 12-7 to the Biloxi Shuckers in a 4-hour, 2-minute game Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
After falling behind 7-0 early, the BayBears (40-55 overall, 13-14 second half) plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The first six batters of the inning reached, including three straight doubles to start the frame. Erick Salcedo plated two runs with a two-bagger and scored the fourth run of the inning three batters later.
However, Mobile did not get any closer for the rest of the game. The Shuckers (58-39, 17-10) added two runs in the sixth and three in the eighth against the BayBears bullpen. Mobile relievers have allowed 12 runs, 11 earned, over the past two games.
Both starters were chased from the game before recording an out in the fourth inning. Tyler Carpenter (1-1) was tagged for seven runs on six hits, and Alec Bettinger gave up four runs on five hits. Marcos Diplan (2-4) surrendered just one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win for Biloxi.
For the second straight game, all nine players in the BayBears starting lineup reached base.
Cooper Hummel was a triple away from hitting for the cycle, leading the Shuckers with four hits. Dillon Thomas hit a home run for the second consecutive night, a three-run shot in the first, and he drove in five runs.
After a 51-minute delay and 403 pitches, the final out of the game was recorded just two minutes shy of midnight. It was the longest nine-inning contest in Mobile's three seasons as an Angels affiliate and was the first BayBears game to last over four hours since August 1, 2017, a 13-inning home game against Mississippi.
The BayBears continue the four-game home series against Biloxi Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Luis Madero (4-7, 5.31 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Dylan File (4-1, 3.58 ERA) for the Shuckers.
