MOBILE, Ala. (May 11, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, dropped a rain-shortened series opener 3-1 to the Jackson Generals in front of 3,106 fans Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The BayBears (15-20) out-hit the Generals 6-5 but left seven runners on base in the five-inning game. Mobile failed to score with the bases loaded in the first and runners on second and third in the fifth.
Kevin McCanna (2-0) matched his career-high with nine strikeouts and allowed just one unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. Bo Way hit a one-out double, advanced to third base on a fielding error, and scored on a Brandon Sandoval single. McCanna has not surrendered an earned run in his first 10 innings at the Double-A level.
After two scoreless innings, the Generals (18-16) got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Former BayBear Jamie Westbrook opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left field, and Dalton Varsho followed with an RBI single. Drew Ellis hit his second home run in the fourth to increase Jackson's lead to 3-0.
Brandon Marsh recorded his team-high sixth multi-hit game, going 2-for-3, but he was left stranded in scoring position twice.
The game was interrupted by inclement weather after the completion of the fifth inning and play was unable to resume. As a result, Jackson was awarded the 3-1 victory.
