BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (June 25, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, came from behind with runs in the eighth and ninth innings to defeat the Birmingham Barons 5-4 in the series opener Tuesday night at Regions Field.
Zane Gurwitz had a pair of hits and his first two Double-A RBIs, including a game-tying single in the eighth inning. For the second straight game, Bo Way drove in the game-winning run. Way drew a two-out walk against Mauricio Cabrera (3-3) with the bases loaded in the ninth to plate Jack Kruger , who matched his career-high with four hits.
Andrew Wantz struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk in a five-inning start. The BayBears (31-43 overall, 4-2 second half) did not allow an earned run over the next four innings. Isaac Mattson (3-1) earned the win with two scoreless innings, and Adam Hofacket recorded his fourth save.
After the BayBears took a 3-1 lead in the fourth, Birmingham (29-46, 2-4) scored the next three runs. Luis Robert tied the game with a bases-loaded walk in the sixth, and Nick Madrigal was hit by a pitch to give the Barons a 4-3 advantage.
