MOBILE, Ala. (June 11, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, split a doubleheader against the Birmingham Barons Tuesday afternoon at Hank Aaron Stadium, winning the first game 5-3 and falling in the second game 4-1.
GAME ONE:
After allowing a pair of runs in the top of the first, Jesus Castillo (4-6) settled down and pitched four scoreless frames. It was the ninth consecutive outing that Castillo has given up two earned runs or fewer.
Jhoan Urena put the BayBears in front with a three-run homer off Matt Tomshaw (2-2) in the bottom of the first. Jo Adell added to the lead the following inning with an RBI double.
Luis Robert went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, and Nick Madrigal recorded multiple hits for a fourth consecutive game with Birmingham.
GAME TWO:
Despite tying the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third, the BayBears (24-38) were never able to jump ahead in the series finale.
Luis Robert put the Barons (26-38) in front for good with an RBI single off Joe Gatto (3-2) in the fifth. Birmingham added runs in the sixth and seventh to extend the lead.
Kyle Kubat (4-2) allowed just one unearned run in a six-inning start. Alec Hansen earned the save with a scoreless, hitless seventh.
The BayBears begin a six-game road series against the Mississippi Braves Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Luis Madero (3-3, 3.50 ERA) is scheduled to make the start for Mobile.
