JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 21, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, split Monday's doubleheader against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp with a 1-0 win in game one and an 8-4 loss in game two at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
GAME ONE:
For the second straight start, Jose Suarez (2-1) struck out a career-high 11 batters. He allowed two scattered singles and one walk over five scoreless innings. Ryan Clark completed the shutout with a six-out save, his third of the season. He fanned three batters and only gave up one hit.
Matt Thaiss reached base in all three of his plate appearances, with a pair of singles and a walk. He scored the only run of the game on a Zach Houchins double in the first.
Cody Poteet (2-4) took the loss, despite allowing just one run in seven innings pitched. It was the first complete game of his career.
GAME TWO:
The BayBears (23-21) had a pair of two-run leads, but the Jumbo Shrimp (18-27) tallied six unanswered runs against Jesus Castillo (4-3). Castillo has surrendered 13 runs on 15 hits in his two outings against Jacksonville.
Houchins went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the first inning. Mobile plated two runs in the first and two more in the fourth to grab a 4-2 lead. John Norwood and Brian Schales both hit RBI singles to tie the game in the fifth, and Jacksonville plated four runs on four hits in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead.
Kyle Keller (1-0) tossed a scoreless, hitless sixth inning to earn the win in his Double-A debut.
The BayBears begin a five-game home series against the Biloxi Shuckers Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. CDT.
