BayBears split doubleheader with Tennessee

KODAK, Tenn. (June 1, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, split Friday's doubleheader against the Tennessee Smokies at Smokies Stadium, dropping the first game 9-1 but winning the second game 4-2.
GAME ONE:
Brennon Lund went 2-for-3 with a seventh-inning home run to break up Tennessee's shutout bid. However, that was the only run the BayBears scored.
The Smokies plated runs in three of the first four frames, including a six-run fourth, against Joe Gatto (0-2). Gatto matched his career-high with nine runs allowed over 3 1/3 innings.
Thomas Hatch (5-3) pitched his second seven-inning complete game of the season. He held the BayBears to the lone run on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Jason Vosler hit a two-run homer in the first to give Tennessee an early lead. He drove in two more runs with a double in the fourth. Vimael Machin also went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
GAME TWO:
After falling behind 1-0 on Trey Martin 's RBI single in the third, the BayBears (28-25) responded with four runs over the final four innings.
Jose Rojas plated Lund with a groundout in the fourth to tie the game 1-1. Then, he drove in a pair of runs with a two-out double off Scott Effross (0-3) in the sixth to give Mobile a 3-1 lead. Brendon Sanger added a run of insurance with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Alex Klonowski (2-0) retired the first eight Smokies (28-25) batters before giving up a run on two hits in the third. He proceeded to toss three more hitless frames and recorded a quality start. Tyler Stevens worked around a two-out walk and a double in the ninth, striking out two batters to earn his second save.
The BayBears wrap up the five-game road series against Tennessee Saturday at 6:00 p.m. CDT. Right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning (1-0, 1.72 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Oscar De La Cruz (5-5, 4.99 ERA) for the Smokies.
