MOBILE, Ala. (July 31, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, cut an early deficit to just one run twice but dropped the series finale 6-3 to the Mississippi Braves Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Jo Adell came off the bench as a defensive replacement in the top of the sixth inning and immediately made an impact at the plate. With the BayBears (41-66 overall, 14-25 second half) trailing by two, Adell hit a home run on the second pitch leading off the bottom of the sixth. It landed at the top of BayBear Mountain in left-center field and cut Mississippi's lead to 4-3.
However, the BayBears went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and were never able to grab the lead. The Braves plated two four runs in the first two innings against Luis Madero (4-9). Ryan Casteel hit a two-run homer in the first, and Carlos Martínez added a two-run shot in the eighth.
Jordan Zimmerman went 3-for-4 and finished the series 11-for-21. Zimmerman had multiple hits in four of the five games in the set.
Jasseel De La Cruz (3-6) earned the win with a quality start, allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings. Bradley Roney struck out the side in the ninth to record his first save for the Braves (53-55, 20-19).
The BayBears begin a five-game road series against the Jackson Generals Thursday at 6:05 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Jeremy Beasley (5-5, 3.84 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Cole Stapler (2-0, 4.03 ERA) for the Generals.
