MONTGOMERY, Ala. (April 26, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, got on the board early but went silent for the final eight innings in an 8-1 loss to the Montgomery Biscuits in the series opener Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Hutton Moyer drove in Taylor Ward with a two-out single in the first inning. The BayBears (10-10) loaded the bases with back-to-back walks but failed to add to the lead. Mobile did not put another runner in scoring position after the second.
Luis Pena (0-3) gave up just one hit, but it was a two-run homer to Brandon Lowe in the first that put the Biscuits (7-14) in front for good. Pena struck out five batters over 4 2/3 innings, but he was handed his third straight loss.
After Génesis Cabrera (2-2) departed, four Montgomery relievers combined to hold the BayBears hitless for the final four frames. The Biscuits retired 11 consecutive Mobile hitters to finish the game.
Montgomery padded its lead by scoring two runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.
The BayBears continue a five-game road series against Montgomery Friday at 12:05 p.m. CDT. Right-handed pitcher Jose Rodriguez (1-1, 2.40 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Zach Lee (2-0, 1.66 ERA) for the Biscuits.
