PENSACOLA, Fla. (April 22, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, tallied four runs in the fourth inning to take a brief lead but could not hold on, falling 7-4 to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Monday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
After a first-inning Pensacola (13-5) run, the BayBears (6-11) responded with a four-run top of the fourth against Brusdar Graterol (2-0). Roberto Peña hit a two-run single to give Mobile its first lead of the series. All nine of Pena's hits this season have come against the Blue Wahoos. Brendon Sanger , who went deep in Sunday's game, followed with another two-run homer to make the score 4-1.
However, the lead was short-lived. The Blue Wahoos responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth against Jose Rodriguez to tie the game and surged back in front courtesy of a Caleb Hamilton RBI single off Zack Kelly (1-1) in the fifth. Kelly gave up a pair of additional unearned runs in the eighth as Pensacola stretched its lead to 7-4.
The BayBears had chances to rally back, putting runners on third base in three of the last four innings. Sam Clay and Ryan Mason worked out of trouble, tossing two scoreless innings apiece. Mason earned his third save of the season.
The BayBears continue the five-game road series against Pensacola Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Jeremy Beasley (0-1, 5.91 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against southpaw Devin Smeltzer (2-0, 0.50 ERA) for the Blue Wahoos.
