Big First Dooms Jackets in Fifth Straight Loss

Charleston Tags Angeles for Six Runs to Secure Victory Early

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: The Charleston RiverDogs (25-19, 62-48) batted around in the top of the first, scoring six men on ten batters to deal a crippling blow right off the bat against the Augusta GreenJackets (22-20, 57-51) as they steamrolled to an 8-1 victory Wednesday night.

It was a second straight tough outing at home for Gensi Angeles, who did not make it out of the first inning and got tagged with five earned runs and his second loss in three Single-A games. Angeles gave up four hits including an RBI double to Andreimi Antunez, and also issued a walk and hit by pitch that led to the lengthy first frame.

The Augusta offense was never able to counterpunch, as a series of arms threw well in short stints to keep the Jackets at bay. Luke Johnson served as an opener, and allowed just one hit in two scoreless frames. He was replaced by Aidan Cremarosa in his first outing off the Injured List, and though Cremarosa did allow an RBI single to Caleb Klein, he also struck out four and looked to be gaining health as the playoffs approach.

The highlight of the day for the GreenJackets was Daniel Brooks, who was brilliant once again in long relief. After two runs scored against Kade Woods to bring the lead to eight, Brooks put a stopper on the RiverDogs rally over a career-high 4.1 innings. Brooks faced 13 men and retired them all, and has now recorded 24 consecutive outs going back to July 29th.

After Brooks’ inevitable departure, the RiverDogs erased any lingering doubt of the end result with three more runs in the final two innings. Brody Donay hammered a solo home run off the batter’s eye to start the eighth, and four straight hits in the ninth against Carter Lovasz birthed two more runs to push the RiverDogs into double figures.

Augusta worked its way to eight hits in the game, and had a baserunner in seven of nine frames, but scored just once after Klein’s RBI knock in the fourth. That lone run came via a wild pitch in the eighth from Dylan Lesko, but the Jackets left nine men on base in the game as they tied a season high with their fifth consecutive loss.

Tomorrow promises a battle of two prominent arms, as Charleston’s Aidan Haugh battles Augusta’s Davis Polo at SRP Park. Haugh is top five in the league in both innings and strikeouts, while Polo has a chance to become the first GreenJacket in four years to cross the 100-strikeout mark in a single season if he punches out four or more tomorrow.
