Big Inning sends Biscuits past Shrimp 11-5

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (8-6, 38-46) fell to the Montgomery Biscuits (7-7, 44-40) by a 11-5 score in the third game of the five-game series at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium on Thursday night.


MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (8-6, 38-46) fell to the Montgomery Biscuits (7-7, 44-40) by a 11-5 score in the third game of the five-game series at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium on Thursday night.

Montgomery left-handed starting pitcher Logan Darnell earned the victory in his Biscuits debut. Darnell worked seven innings where he allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Jacksonville right-handed starter Chris Mazza (1-5) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Biscuits scored first with a three-run bottom of the second. Andrew Velazquez opened the scoring with a two-run single, then Nathan Lukes added a sacrifice fly to put the lead at 3-0. Justin Williams added an RBI double in the third inning to put the lead at 4-0.
Jacksonville responded in the fourth, first with a sacrifice fly from Taylor Ard to make it 4-1, before an error by Biscuits shortstop Velazquez on a ball hit by Rodrigo Vigil scored David Vidal from second to put the score at 4-2. Jacksonville got within a run in the fifth inning, with a Brian Anderson RBI groundout to third scoring Braxton Lee to put the score at 4-3.
The Biscuits loaded the bases with two outs against Jacksonville left-handed reliever Jeff Kinley in the bottom of the sixth. Right-hander Severino González entered from the bullpen, and allowed a three-run triple to Grant Kay to grow the lead to 7-3. The next batter Dalton Kelly smashed a two-run homer to left-center to put the Montgomery lead at 9-3, capping the five-run, two-out rally.
Montgomery added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth off Jacksonville right-handed reliever Andy Beltre. Kay supplied an RBI double before Kelly brought him home on an RBI single to grow the lead to 11-3.
Jacksonville scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning of Biscuits reliever Yoel Espinal, as he had three wild pitches in the frame, two that brought in runs to get the Jumbo Shrimp within a score of 11-5. Espinal struck out Ard swinging to end the game in the six-run victory for Montgomery.
Jacksonville had runners on base each inning, yet hit 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Vidal extended his hitting streak to seven games since returning to Jacksonville from Triple-A New Orleans with a 1-for-4 performance, and Lee and Norwood had multi-hit games.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Biscuits will continue their series with the fourth game of the five-game set on Friday night at 8:05 p.m. at Riverwalk Stadium. Left-handed pitcher Matt Tomshaw (8-4, 3.43 ERA) will start for the Jumbo Shrimp against Biscuits left-handed pitcher Génesis Cabrera (1-1, 1.38 ERA).
