Birds blanked by Buies Creek in fifth straight loss

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (June 28, 2018) - The Buies Creek Astros handed the Myrtle Beach Pelicans their fifth straight loss on Thursday night, 5-0, in front of 5,108 fans at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. 
Astros (43-34, 6-2) starter Carson LaRue (4-4) fired five shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out three and walking one in the win. Tyler Ivey fired three scoreless innings before yielding to Ronel Blanco, who pitched a scoreless ninth.

The offense backed LaRue early for Buies Creek. In the first inning, Osvaldo Duarte ripped an RBI triple and Cody Bohanek added a run-scoring single to make it 2-0.
The Astros added on a pair more in the sixth to make it 4-0 on an RBI double from Carlos Canelon and a Jacob Meyers RBI base hit. 
Meyers scored on an error in the ninth to give the Astros a 5-0 advantage. 
Tyler Peyton pitched well out of the bullpen for the Pelicans (35-43, 1-7), tossing 3.1 innings, only ceding an unearned run while striking out three. 
Erick Leal (0-1) took the loss, yielding two runs over his two innings in the start. 
Myrtle Beach's Andruw Monasterio extended his Carolina League-best on-base streak to 20 games with a single in the third inning.
Jhonny Pereda finished the night 3-for-4 for the Birds, making him 6-for-13 through the first four games of the set. 
Pelicans RHP Cory Abbott (1-2, 6.23) is slated to start Friday's 7:05 p.m. first pitch against Buies Creek RHP Abdiel Saldana (6-0, 3.16) in the fifth and final game of the series. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.tv, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app and TuneIn.
