Myrtle Beach falls in Winston-Salem, snaps streak at nine games

Despite three runs in the ninth, Pelicans lose series opener 10-7

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 11, 2018) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans' nine-game winning streak came to a halt on Monday night in a 10-7 loss to the Winston-Salem Dash from BB&T Ballpark. 
With the score tied at four, Winston-Salem (37-27) exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Yeyson Yrizarri plated the frame's first run with an RBI single before Blake Rutherford blasted a three-run triple off of the wall in center. Rutherford was thrown out trying for an inside-the-park grand slam. Micker Adolfo capped the inning with an RBI double to make it 9-4 Dash. 

A sacrifice fly in the seventh inning from Roman extended the Dash's lead to 10-4. 
With two outs in the ninth inning and the Pelicans (33-30) trailing 10-4, Andruw Monasterio delivered an RBI single and Jhonny Pereda blasted a two-run double to pull to within 10-7, However, the Birds could not complete the comeback. 
In a back-and-forth contest, Myrtle Beach struck first. Pereda, who matched a career-high with three RBIs, banged an RBI double down the right field line to score Monasterio in the first to quickly put the Pelicans up 1-0. 
The Dash fired back in the second to take the lead with a sacrifice fly from Mitch Roman and a Nate Nolan RBI single. They tacked on in the fourth when Nolan ripped his second run-scoring single to make it 3-1. 
Monasterio, who finished 3-for-5 with a career-high-matching three RBIs, tied it up for the Birds with a two-run single of his own in the top of the fifth inning. However, the Dash grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the inning when Rutherford scored on a double play. 
In the top of the sixth, Connor Myers tied the game with a Little League home run. After tripling, the relay throw to third skipped away and Myers scored on the error to knot the game at 4-4. 
Bryan Hudson (4-5) was handed the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, over 5.1 innings while striking out five and walking three. 
For the Dash, Jimmy Lambert (4-6) took home the win by allowing four runs, three earned, over his six frames. 
With the loss, the Pelicans now trail the Dash by 3.5 games in the Southern Division with seven contests remaining in the first half.
Myrtle Beach continues its three-game series with Tuesday's 7 p.m. contest against the Dash. RHP Alex Lange (4-2, 2.89 ERA) goes for the Birds against Winston-Salem All-Star, LHP Bernardo Flores (4-4, 2.80 ERA).
