The Blue Wahoos will not have a home baseball game before the Fourth of July.
But there will be a ballpark experience on July 3, complete with kids’ games, activities and a fireworks show.
In another first-time event, the Blue Wahoos Summer Celebration is an early-evening opportunity that day for people to be at the stadium without a game, but having a variety of on-field activities that will include a movie, a water slide, inflatable toys, family games, followed by stadium fireworks.
The Blue Wahoos team will be playing on the road July 3 against the Montgomery Biscuits to complete a two-week road trip. This is the first time the team has been on the road for such an extended period prior to the Fourth of July.
“We were talking about July third being a day that people will probably be off, or will be taking time off before the Fourth of July,” said Blue Wahoos event sales manager Shannon Reeves. “And it’s summertime, families are looking for something to do, the kids are home and we thought why not open the stadium and just have a pre-Fourth of July celebration?
“That is how the idea was born. We’re happy to offer parents a chance to come to the ballpark and let their kids run around and have a good time, plus bringing people family fun activities to do.”
The Blue Wahoos will play a home game July 4 – only the second time in the past 10 years it has happened – but won’t have stadium fireworks after the game.
The start time that day against the Biloxi Shuckers is 4:05 p.m., which is designed to allow fans to exit the stadium and then take in the downtown activities that culminate with the annual Pensacola Fourth of July fireworks show on the water across from Bayfront Parkway.
This year's downtown show on July 4 is being produced by Pyro Shows from Tennessee, the same company the Blue Wahoos have used since their inaugural 2012 season. The Pensacola show is co-sponsored for the first time by the Greater Pensacola Chamber of Commerce and Pensacola Young Professionals.
The Blue Wahoos will next have a post-game fireworks show on July 5 and July 8 at the stadium during the series against Biloxi.
“This is why we chose to have holiday fireworks on Monday (July 3), even though there’s no game,” Reeves said. “It’s the Fourth of July getting started on July third. We think it will be a good chance for families and people to just come out, hang out and have some fun here with things for people of all ages to enjoy.”
When the Blue Wahoos begin the second half of their season on Wednesday in Montgomery, it will be their first game in four days.
The final game of their series Sunday in Kodak, Tennessee against the Tennessee Smokies was rained out, making it the third game of that road trip that was either postponed, or in this case, cancelled with no makeup date since the teams won’t play again this season.
