In their opening game of a four-game series against the Billings Mustangs (34-38, 16-19), the Helena Brewers (27-46, 12-23) were held to just four hits in a 10-2 loss on Wednesday night at Dehler Park.
Helena put a run on the board in the first against Hunter Greene, the Cincinnati Reds second overall pick in the 2017 draft. KJ Harrison walked with two outs, bringing Gabriel Garcia to the plate. The Brewers first baseman singled to right field and Harrison raced around second to try and take third. Mustangs third baseman Leandro Santana fielded the ball and made an errant throw back to second, allowing Harrison to score, giving Helena a 1-0 lead.
The Brewers would hold the lead until the bottom of the third inning. Billings tagged starter Harold Chirino (1-6) for four runs in the frame, including two on a home run by J.D. Salome-Williams, his third of the season.
From the second through the sixth inning, the Brewers sent just three men to the plate in each half inning, hitting into a pair of inning ending double plays. Reliever Tyler Mondile (4-4) allowed just two hits in 4.0 innings of work against Helena.
Billings broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh. Brewers reliever Cody Martin walked the first batter he faced, surrendered a single and loaded the bases with a walk two batters later. Martin forced in a run on his third walk of the inning and gave up a grand slam to Jake Turnbull, pushing Billings to a 10-1 lead.
Helena continues their series against the Mustangs on Thursday night at 7:05 PM. The Brewers are scheduled to send RHP Alec Bettinger (3-3, 4.91) to the mound against Mustangs LHP Packy Naughton (3-3, 3.38).
