In an action packed day, the Helena Brewers swept a double header from the Orem Owlz, winning game one 8-7 and game two 4-3 on Monday night at Kindrick Legion Field.
Game One
In a make up of a game scheduled for August 9 that was rained out, Helena played as the visiting team against the Owlz and used a pair of exceptional plays in the ninth inning to grab the victory.
Tied 6-6 in the top of the ninth inning, Jose Gomez was hit by a pitch to start the frame, bringing KJ Harrison to the plate. The Brewers catcher demolished a 437-foot home run, his second of the game and fourth of the season, to give Helena an 8-6 lead. Harrison finished game one 3-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored.
The game came down to an outstanding defensive play in the bottom of the ninth. Orem loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, and scored a run when reliever Parker Bean (1-1) issued a walk with the bases loaded, forcing in a run to make it 8-7. With the bases still loaded and one out, Kevin Williams Jr. Jr. bounced a ball out to short, where Antonio Pinero started a 6-4-3 double play that ended the game.
The Brewers jumped out in front in the top of the first on a Payton Henry RBI single. Helena added to their lead in the third with doubles from Jose Gomez and Jay Feliciano, making it 2-0. Gabriel Garcia and Chad McClanahan followed with back-to-back two-out singles, pushing Helena's lead to 4-0.
Starter Dylan File cruised through his first three innings of work, not allowing a base runner the first time through the order. The perfect game came to an end in the top of the fourth, when Manuel Guzman hit a lead off home run, his third of the season, to make it 4-1.
Harrison's first home run of the game came when he led off the fifth, hitting a solo shot to lengthen the Brewers lead back to four runs.
File exited the game after allowing another solo home run in the sixth and a one-out single, leaving with a 5-2 lead. Reliever Robbie Hitt entered and surrendered a double and a home run to the next two batters, bringing the Owlz level with Helena 5-5 and forcing extra innings.
In the eighth, Helena found a run to go ahead on just one hit. Nicolas Pierre doubled with one out, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball, giving the Brewers a 6-5 lead. Orem forced another extra frame when Angel Molina doubled in a runner with two-outs in the bottom of the eighth, tying the game 6-6.
Reliever Parker Bean (1-1) picked up his first victory of the season after throwing 1.2 innings and allowing a run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Game Two
Thirty minutes after the conclusion of game one, the Brewers and Owlz picked up where the first game left off, putting a pair of runs on the board in the opening frame. Ryan Vega doubled to score Torii Hunter Jr. Jr. in the top of the first, giving the Owlz an early 1-0 lead.
Batting with one out in the bottom of the first, Gomez hit a solo home run to left, his fifth of the year and first since July 3, to tie the game 1-1. The Brewers went ahead in the third on a Harrison two-RBI single, part of another three-hit effort from Harrison. Between the two games, the 20-year-old went 6-for-8 with two home runs, five RBI and two runs scored.
Yet again, the Owlz forced their way back into the game, plating a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth, knotting the game 3-3. In the home half of the sixth, McClanahan walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next two batters struck out, but Pierre came through with a two-out single, driving in McClanahan to give Helena a 4-3 lead.
Matt Hardy entered the game in the top of the seventh to lock down the game for the Brewers. He induced a pair of grounders for the first two outs, but Vega reached on a fielding error by Gabriel Garcia. First baseman David Mackinnon connected on a ball to straightaway centerfield, but Gomez tracked it down on the warning track, securing it for the final out.
