Brosius’ Big Debut Leads GreenJackets Past Crawdads

Outfielder Homers in First Pro At Bat, Augusta Evens Series

HICKORY, NC: Parker Brosius’ only official at bat in his first professional start was a loud one, as the right fielder clubbed a 425-foot home run on his first swing to propel the Augusta GreenJackets (21-15, 56-46) past the Hickory Crawdads (27-10, 61-40) 7-5 Wednesday night.

A Georgia kid through and through who grew up right outside of Atlanta before spending his entire college career at Georgia Tech, the drafting of Brosius was exciting enough before his debut added fuel to the proverbial fire. The night that began with a two-run blast off of Alejandro Chiquillo also included a walk, hit by pitch, and sacrifice fly in an altogether perfect evening for the outfielder.

The GreenJackets received a solid start from Gensi Angeles, who rinsed his hands of a difficult debut last week to post four solid innings in Hickory. At just 18 years old, Angeles showed poise throughout the night, navigating a dangerous turn in the second to hold the Crawdads to just two runs, and then allowing no more earned runs as Augusta regained the lead.

After the Crawdads tied the game in the second, Augusta’s offense responded well to regain a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the night. Cooper McMurray put the Jackets back in front with an RBI single, before Caden Merritt doubled the lead with an RBI fielder’s choice. One inning later, Matt Scannell tacked on with a two-out triple in his first start since returning to Augusta to stretch the lead against the bullpen.

The GreenJacket bullpen was asked to cover five innings behind Angeles, but three relievers were up to the task against the vaunted Crawdad lineup. Adiel Melendez got the win with two scoreless innings, while Logan Forsythe navigated a leadoff homer from Paulino Santana to work strongly through 1.2 innings. Styven Paez was asked to close the door, and slammed it shut with a four-out save, his sixth save of the year.

With tonight’s win, the GreenJackets have snapped Hickory’s five-game win streak, and evened this crucial series at one victory apiece. Tomorrow is a battle of elite arms, as Augusta’s strikeout leader Davis Polo takes the mound against reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Month Evan Siary, who struck out ten GreenJackets in six scoreless innings at SRP Park last month.
