Frisco, TX - In Walker Buehler's previous start last Sunday afternoon, he pitched five innings and struck out 10 Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Friday night he would pick up right where he left off as he led the Drillers to a 6-0 shutout win against the Frisco Roughriders.
Even by having to work with a limited pitch count, Drillers starter Walker Buehler continued to impress. He worked five and a third and struck out seven Roughriders. On the night he only gave up two singles and did not allow a Frisco batter to get past second base. It is becoming apparent why he is one of the Dodgers top pitching prospects.
Tulsa got the scoring started in the top of the second by Henry Ramos leading off the inning with a single, and then Matt Beaty moving him to third with a single of his own. With Jacob Scavuzzo batting, Frisco starter Cody Palmquist threw a wild pitch to plate Ramos and give the Drillers the lead. A couple batters later, Wynston Sawyer knocked in Beaty with a single, giving Tulsa a 2-0 advantage.
The Drillers would keep the runs coming in the top half of the third. Erick Mejia and Jose Fernandez both singled to start the inning, and then Edwin Ríos knocked in his 60th RBI of the season on a double to right. Ramos would get into the middle of the action as again as he added to Tulsa run total with a sac fly. Beaty them capped the inning off by blasting a two-run homer to bring the Drillers to a 6-0 lead.
The six runs would prove to be more than enough for the Drillers bullpen to hold it down the rest of the way. Yaisel Sierra replaced Buehler in the bottom of the sixth and had a great night to help keep the Frisco bats in check.
In the bottom of the seventh, after striking out three of the first four Roughriders he faced, Sierra allowed a single to Juremi Profar and allowed him to reach third by throwing a pair of wild pitches. But this would be as far as any Frisco batter would get on the night as he struck out Eric Aguilera to end the inning. Overall Sierra pitched two and two-thirds, gave up three hits and struck out six.
In to replace Sierra in the bottom of the ninth came Drillers newcomer Chris Cotton. The first batter he faced as a Driller did not go as planned, as he allowed a leadoff walk. But the rest of the inning went exactly as planned as he got a pop-out, and then got Jose Trevino to ground into a game-ending double play to secure the 6-0 shutout for the Drillers.
The Drillers will look to secure the series win in the rubber game on Saturday night. Tulsa starter Chris Rearick (0-1, 3.27 ERA) will face Ariel Jurado (7-5, 4.16 ERA) of the Roughriders. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco.
