JUPITER, FL - Tommy Bergjans allowed just three hits in six scoreless innings on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium but the Cardinals scored five unanswered runs over the final three innings to steal the series opener with a walk-off win. The 5-4 loss guarantees the Tortugas a season series loss with Palm Beach.
Daytona got the scoring started in the top of the third. Ibandel Isabel drew a leadoff walk and moved first-to-third on a Stuart Fairchild double. Both runners came into score on a Michael Beltre ground-rule double. Two batters later, Beltre came around to score on a two-run homerun off the bat of Alfredo Rodriguez, his first of the season, putting Daytona up 4-0.
After Bergjans went the first six, RHP Aaron Fossas came on to start the seventh. After retiring the first batter, Fossas hit one, walked one, and allowed a single to load up the bases with one out.
Fossas was pulled after just ⅓ of an inning for Michael Byrne, who was asked to strand the bases loaded. After striking out Danny Hudzina for the second out, Byrne surrendered a three-run double to Juan Yepez, shrinking the lead to 4-3. The next man up, Kramer Robertson hit an RBI single, scoring Yepez, to tie the game at four.
In the top of the ninth inning, The Tortugas got the go-ahead run to third base with two away, but Rodriguez struckout to end the inning.
Then in the bottom of the ninth with two-outs and runners on first and second, Dylan Carlson hit a game-winning RBI single off of RHP Ryan Hendrix to give Palm Beach the 5-4 victory.
RHP Bryan Dobzanski (2-0) takes the win in relief. He allowed two hits and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning. LHP Carlos Diaz (0-1) is handed the loss. The winning run was charged to his tab, along with two hits and two strikeouts in 1 ⅓ innings.
The Tortugas will look to even up the series Wednesday night with RHP Tejay Antone (2-2, 4.47) on the hill. Palm Beach will counter with RHP Evan Guillory (1-2, 8.89).
First pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 6:30 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:20 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
