Cooper Hummel homered twice and drove in a career-high tying five runs to lead the Durham Bulls over the Gwinnett Stripers 8-2 at Coolray Field on Wednesday night.

Hummel homered in the second to put the Bulls (30-26) ahead 1-0. Hummel struck again just after a Gwinnett (29-29) pitching change, taking out Daysbel Hernandez in the fifth to move the lead to 6-0. Hummel went 3-4 and has homered six times in 44 at-bats since he signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent in mid-August.

Joe Boyle (W, 8-4) worked five no-hit innings, walking five and fanning six to earn his second straight win since being optioned to Durham.

Tanner Murray connected for a solo homer in the fourth - his 18th - extending his career-best power season.

How It Happened: Hummel was the story. He turned on a 96mph pitch from Jhancarlos Lara in the second for a 1-0 lead. In his next at-bat, Hummel was drilled on the back of the right shoulder by a 101.7mph pitch from Lara. Then in the fifth, Lara surrendered a single and double on his first two pitches of the inning, and was relieved by Hernandez. Hummel drove a high-arcing flyball over the right field wall and inside the foul pole for his second of the night. Hummel then singled in Durham's sixth inning run into left-center. Hummel has driven in five runs in a game just one other time in his career, last August 25th, 2024, going 3-4 for Sugar Land against Albuquerque, with two homers and five RBI.

Boyle Wins Again: Joe Boyle won his second straight start since he was optioned down to Durham by Tampa Bay. Boyle tossed five hitless innings, but walked five with six strikeouts. Boyle walked three in the second inning before Matthew Batten lined to left field to close the inning. Since his demotion, Boyle has thrown 10 scoreless innings, permitting two hits, walking eight and fanning 14.

What's Next: The Bulls and Stripers will play a Thursday doubleheader at 5:05 PM ET. Yoniel Curet is slated to start the opener for Durham, with the Game Two starter TBD. Gwinnett has penciled in Jose Suarez in the opener and former Bulls pitcher Nathan Wiles in the nightcap.
