Charlotte, NC --- A three-run sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie, keying a 4-2 Charlotte Knights victory over Durham, breaking the Bulls' seven-game winning streak at BB&T Ballpark on Wednesday night.
A sellout crowd of 10,831 saw the Knights (39-46) crack a 1-1 game by scoring three times against Adam Kolarek (L, 4-1). Kolarek, who did not allow a run in any June appearance, surrendered a season-high three runs in the frame. The first three Knights reached, including Seby Zavala, who doubled home José Rondón with the tie-breaking run. A grounder by Mason Robbins scored a second ran, followed by a bloop single inside the right field line by Dustin Garneau scored the third and final run in the inning.
Charlotte took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Robbins legged out a bases-loaded infield single against reliever Ruben Alaniz.
The Bulls tied the game in the fifth on a single to left-center by Jason Coats, soring Velazquez from second base.
Trailing 4-1 in the eighth, Velazquez struck for an opposite field home run against Ricardo Pinto to draw the Bulls to within 4-2. The homer, Velazquez' eighth in a Bulls uniform, was his 10th combined in 2018, a career high.
Kyle Bird started the game for the Bulls, working three hitless innings, permitting one run and fanning five. Mike Franco worked two perfect innings to close out the game.
Jeanmar Gómez (W, 5-0) notched the win with a shutout sixth inning. Ian Hamilton (S, 3) picked up his third Triple-A save and his 15th of the season with a pair of strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning. Jordan Guerrero worked five innings of one-run ball for the Knights in his second career Triple-A start.
Durham concludes its brief two-game trip to Charlotte on Thursday night at 7:04 PM ET with Andrew Moore (2-3, 3.94) opposing Michael Kopech (3-6, 4.42).
