VANCOUVER, BC – The Canadians bounced back after three consecutive losses when they crushed the Spokane Indians (COL) in a 14-0 shutout Sunday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd at The Nat. The C’s scored first in the fourth and continued to add to their lead in each of the remaining innings. Home runs from Jake Casey and Alexis Hernandez added to the score in the middle stanzas before the C’s erupted for an eight-run eighth inning, where they sent twelve men to the plate.
The Canadians broke open the scoring in the fourth when newcomer Austin Smith recorded his first hit and RBI in High-A with a single. In the fifth, Casey hit a sky-scraping home run that left the bat at 113 MPH, before another run was added on a bases loaded walk to make the score 3-0. Hernandez sent a dinger to center field to add two more runs on the board in the next stanza.
One run was plated in the seventh, before the Canadians would score eight runs and send 12 men to the plate in the eighth. The inning started with a Ryan Sprock homer that landed in the C’s bullpen. A double and a single would score the next two runs, before the Indians’ first error of the inning would plate another. After a wild pitch allowed two C’s runners to get into scoring positions, a sac fly and another fielding error would put two more runs on the board. Sprock doubled for his second hit of the frame and Casey added a sacrifice fly to his line to round out the inning. When the dust settled, it was 14-0.
4 Blue Jays prospect Johnny King (W, 5-2) got the start, going for five scoreless innings, scattering just three hits, and walking three. With his seven strikeouts, he now leads the league with 107 Ks on the season.
Carson Myers (H, 3) emerged out of the bullpen to start the sixth, giving up just one hit and putting zeros across the rest of his line. Closing out the game was Reece Wissinger, who put up two clean innings of relief and K’ed a pair in his time on the mound. With the win, the Canadians split the series against the Spokane Indians.
The C’s will head on the road and make their first visit to Everett to take on the AquaSox. First pitch on Tuesday will be at 7:05 p.m.
