C's Crumble In 9th, Lose 9-7

VANCOUVER, BC – The Canadians dropped their lead in the final inning Thursday night at The Nat against the Spokane Indians (COL) in a 9-7 loss. The C’s would put the first run on the board before the Indians scored one to tie it up in the second. In the third, the Canadians would plate four more runs and add another two in the sixth then carried their lead into the top of the ninth before Spokane would score five runs and win.
In the eighth, the Canadians left one man at third after a one-out triple from newcomer Dariel Ramon and headed into the ninth ahead by three; however, the Indians rallied in the top of the inning. They sent five runs around the bases on six hits to take the lead for the first time all series.
In the first, Maddox Latta started the stanza by reaching hird on a dropped fly ball and an Alexis Hernandez groundout in the next bat put the first run on the board for the C’s. The Indians added one of their own in the second to tie it up.
Austin Smith was the first batter in the third. On the first pitch he saw in High-A, he was hit by a pitch to reach base before stealing second. One out later, another Hernandez double brought Smith home. After another out, a Jake Casey walk started a chain reaction of run-scoring plays. An Eric Snow RBI single scored the next run, followed by a Peyton Williams rule book double. Finally, Edward Duran capped the inning with an RBI single that plated the fourth run of the frame, to make the score 5-1
Spokane plated two runs in the fifth on an RBI double, and a solo home run in the sixth would put the Indians behind by one. In the bottom of the frame, the Canadians would respond with two runs. With two runners in scoring position, Latta hit a two-RBI single to make the score 7-4.
#16 Blue Jays prospect Daniel Guerra made his first start since returning from the IL. Guerra pitched for two innings, giving up two hits, one run, walking three and striking out two. Carson Myers came on after the first batter of the third and retired six consecutive batters to complete a perfect outing.
Connor O’Halloran and Colby Holcombe both made their first outings since returning to the Canadians after rehabbing injuries. O’Halloran had the fifth, giving up a hit, two runs, walking two and striking out a pair. Holcombe relieved O’Halloran to start the sixth. He pitched for 2.2 innings, giving up two hits including a solo home run. Gilberto Batista (L, 5-4) got the last out of the eighth before surrendering the lead to Spokane with five runs allowed.
The Canadians play again tomorrow with reigning Northwest League Pitcher of the Week Landen Maroudis getting the start. Spokane has not announced a starter. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. as part of a FortisBC ‘Nooner at The Nat.
