Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria Chiefs were held to three hits, just one after the second inning, in a 2-1 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday afternoon. At 10-8 in the second half, the Chiefs will attempt to avoid being swept in the four-game series on Monday afternoon.
The Chiefs scored first for the third day in a row when they struck in the second inning against Kernels lefty Anthony Marzi. Stefan Trosclair singled to left with one out and moved to third on a single by Danny Hudzina. Juan Yepez gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to right but Hudzina was stranded at first base.

Juan Perez pitched the Chiefs to a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning. The Kernels tied the game when leadoff man Aaron Whitefield hit his 10th home run of the season and fourth against Peoria.
The game was still tied into the seventh as Marzi and Perez matched scoreless frames. Perez struck out George Munoz to start the seventh but Munoz ended up at second base on the play. Strike three was a wild pitch and the ball bounced up the third base line where Perez picked it up and launched it into right-center field. Christian Cavaness attempted to sacrifice bunt but against Perez threw wild to first and his second error in as may plays gave the Kernels first and third with nobody out. Keaton Siomkin came out of the bullpen to replace Perez and Whitefield put the Kernels up 2-1 with a sac fly to deep right before the Chiefs escaped the inning.
The Chiefs threatened twice late but came up empty. Matt Fielder walked against Ryan Mason in the eighth inning with one out and was replaced by pinch runner Nick Plummer. Rosen struck out JR Davis looking on a full-count pitch as Plummer was caught stealing to end the inning. Kramer Robertson started the top of the ninth with the Chiefs first hit since the second inning. But Colton Davis retired the next three hitters to end the game.
Perez (2-2) took the loss allowing two runs on four hits over six innings while facing two batters in the seventh. He struck out four, walked three and committed two errors.
