Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs lost game two of a three-game series to the South Bend Cubs on Friday night, 4-3. Peoria is now 12-20 overall and will wrap up their series with South Bend on Saturday at Dozer Park.
The Chiefs took an early lead against Cubs starter Dylan Cease in the first inning. Tommy Edman singled to shallow left-field just over the outstretched glove of Cubs third baseman Zack Short. Edman stole second and went to third on a throwing error by South Bend catcher Tyler Payne on the same play. Andrew Knizner came to the plate with two outs and homered to left-field, giving the Chiefs a 2-0 lead.
South Bend got on the board in the second inning against Chiefs starter John Kilichowski. Jhonny Pereda led off with a walk and moved to second when Alberto Mineo grounded out to first. Brandon Cummins walked to put runners at first and second and Payne singled home Pereda to make it a 2-1 game. Frederis Parra replaced Kilichowski on the mound and struck out Luis Ayala to end the inning.
Short started the third inning for the Cubs by drawing a walk from Parra and was bunted to second by Yeiler Peguero. Short went to third when Isaac Paredes grounded out to put two away for the inning, and scored when Pereda singled on a ground ball through the middle to tie the game, 2-2.
Ronnie Williams relieved Parra for the Chiefs to start the fifth inning and after striking out Short, gave up a single to Peguero. With two outs Peguero stole third and Pereda walked. Mineo doubled to right-center to score both runners and give South Bend a 4-2 lead.
Carlson walked to lead off the sixth inning for the Chiefs against Matt Swarmer and stole second base. Denton singled home Carlson to get the Chiefs within a run, 4-3. Swarmer struck out Plummer swinging in the next at-bat and Denton was caught stealing to end the inning with a double play.
The Chiefs threatened again in the seventh when Edman singled to lead off against Swarmer and stole second base. Young flew out to left-field which allowed Edman to tag and move to third base with one out. Stefan Trosclair walked, representing the go-ahead run, but Knizner grounded into a double play to end the inning.
With one out in the ninth inning, the Chiefs had one chance left when Edman drew a walk against Dakota Mekkes but Knizner grounded into a double play to end the game.
Kilichowski threw 1 2/3 innings while allowing one run on two hits, walking two with a strikeout. Parra went 2 1/3 innings, giving up one run on a hit with two walks and three strikeouts. Williams (1-3) took the loss as he also lasted 2 1/3 innings while allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Ramon Santos went 2 2/3 innings without allowing a run or a hit, walking one with three strikeouts.
Notes… Four of Kilichowski's six starts have been at Dozer Park… Tonight's 1 1/3 inning start is the shortest of Kilichowski's career… Knizner's home run in the first was his fifth of the year, tying him for the team lead with Ryan McCarvel who did not play… Knizner now has a nine-game hit streak, which ties a team-long shared by Edman, O'Keefe, Young, and Shane Billings… When Kilichowski took the mound in the second inning, it was the first time he faced a batter this season with a lead… O'Keefe has a four-game hitting streak… The Chiefs have hit 11 home runs at Dozer Park this season… Trosclair was hit by a pitch for the first time this season during the fifth inning… Edman tied the Chiefs single-game high in steals for 2017 with two, while the Chiefs had a team season high with four… The Chiefs are 3-10 while wearing their white uniforms… Peoria is 5-6 in game two of a series this season… The Chiefs are 3-3 on Friday's and 1-1 at home on Friday's… The Chiefs have hit more home runs (7) on Friday than any other day of the week… The home stand concludes on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. with game three against the South Bend Cubs… There will be Fireworks following the game… The first 1,000 fans (ages 13 & up) in attendance will receive a Greg Maddux v.
