Chiefs Fall 8-4 Saturday

Peoria, IL - The Kane County Cougars overpowered the Peoria Chiefs 8-4 in the second game of a three-game series Saturday night. The Chiefs are now 21-18 overall with the rubber game set for Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

Peoria, IL - The Kane County Cougars overpowered the Peoria Chiefs 8-4 in the second game of a three-game series Saturday night. The Chiefs are now 21-18 overall with the rubber game set for Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

     The Cougars jumped out to an early lead on Chiefs starter Johan Oviedo in the top of the first. With one out Jasrado Chisholm hit a solo home run over the wall in right field to get Kane County on the board first 1-0. Yoel Yanqui drew a walk and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Renae Martinez walked to put runners at the corners and Yan Sanchez doubled home Yanqui for a 2-0 lead. CJ Saylor relieved Oviedo with two outs and two runners in scoring position. Eudy Ramos flared a single down the right field line plating Martinez and Sanchez to extend the advantage to 4-0.
     Kane County added to the score in the top of the fourth inning as Tim Susnara doubled to end Saylor's outing. Alex Fagalde entered out of the bullpen and Susnara advanced to third on a groundout. Gabriel Maciel singled to right as Susnara scored to widen the margin to 5-0.
     The Cougars used the longball in the top of the sixth to extend their lead against Fagalde. Maciel singled with two outs and Chisholm brought him in on a two-run homer that barely cleared the wall in center field for a 7-0 lead.
     The two runs were answered by the Chiefs in the bottom half of the sixth against Cougars starter Brain Shaffer. Zach Kirtley punched a single to right and Dennis Ortega doubled to the right field corner putting two runners in scoring position. Bryce Denton singled to left field as Kirtley scored to put the Chiefs on the board down 7-1. Nick Plummer grounded into a fielder's choice that brought home Ortega as Peoria trailed 7-2.
     Another insurance run came in for Kane County in the top of the eighth. Susnara doubled and with two outs Chisholm singled him home for an 8-2 advantage.
     Reliever Matt Brill let up two runs as the Chiefs attempted a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ortega reached on an error by the second baseman Jancarlos Cintron and Denton singled to put two runners on for Plummer who drove both runners in a double as the Kane County lead dwindled to 8-4.
     Oviedo (1-4) threw 2/3 of an inning allowing four runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Saylor tossed 2 1/3 innings surrendering one run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Fagalde pitched five innings allowing three runs on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Fabian Blanco pitched a scoreless ninth inning with no hits, no walks and no strikeouts.
Notes… 5,774 is the largest crowd at Dozer Park this season …Fagalde made his Chiefs debut and threw a career-high five innings…Ortega has an eight-game hit streak…Plummer has a ten-game hit streak, tying his professional career high from 2015… Denton has a six-game hit streak…The Chiefs are 1-1 in specialty jerseys this season…The outing is the second time this season Oviedo has not made it out of the first inning…He has allowed 14 earned runs in the first inning this season…The Chiefs host Kane County in the series finale at 2:00 p.m. Sunday on Bark in the Park and dogs are all free… Family Sunday with tickets for kids 12 and under are $5 for all Sunday game plus kids can run the bases post-game…The PNC Mobile Learning Adventure is available from Noon to 2 PM at Dozer Park on PNC Pre-K Day…The first 1,000 fans through the gates on Sunday will get an Evan Guillory player poster and all fans can receive autographs postgame…Seniors 55 and over can get $5 tickets on Senior Sundays… The Chiefs will wear special Baby Blue Throwback Jerseys each with them being auctioned off August 26th…The Chiefs will start RHP Evan Guillory (4-2, 3.24) and Kane County will start RHP Jhoan Duran (1-0, 4.15)…The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 1:45 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive and is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Network in the Tune-In Radio App…The game is also available on MiLB.tv for subscribers.
