Chiefs Outlast Cougars Sunday

Peoria evens series with 8-6 win

Geneva, IL - The Peoria Chiefs scored four runs in the second and never gave up the lead in an 8-6 win over the Kane County Cougars Sunday night. The win moves the Chiefs to 38-31 in the second half with one game left.

Geneva, IL - The Peoria Chiefs scored four runs in the second and never gave up the lead in an 8-6 win over the Kane County Cougars Sunday night. The win moves the Chiefs to 38-31 in the second half with one game left.

     The Chiefs got rolling in the second against Emilio Vargas. Evan Mendoza singled to right, Juan Yepez walked and Matt Fielder singled to load the bases with one out. Dylan Carlson gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with a single and Mick Fennell walked to bring home Yepez. After an out JR Davis singled to center to score two more for a 4-0 Chiefs lead.
     Kane County scored two in the bottom of the second off Anthony Shew. The first four batters reached on a double, walk and two singles as the Cougars cur the Chiefs lead to 4-2.
     Peoria loaded the bases against Trevor Simms in the fourth and added on. Carlson was hit by a pitch to start the inning and he stole second before Fennell walked. An error loaded the bases and Carlson scored on a double play. Stefan Trosclair singled home Fennell to put the Chiefs on top 6-2 with his team-leading 56th RBI.
     After Kane County scored in the fourth inning on a solo homer, the Chiefs got another run off Simms in the fifth. Yepez singled with one out and went to second on an errant pickoff throw by Simms. With two down, Carlson singled to center to give the Chiefs a 7-3 lead.
     Kane County scored an unearned run in the fifth to again get within three before the Chiefs answered. Davis doubled off new reliever Cal Becker with one out and Evan Mendoza doubled him home for an 8-4 Chiefs lead. The Cougars scored two late runs to narrow the gap to 8-6.
     Shew (5-0) earned the win as he allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out four while allowing a home run. Leland Tilley allowed one run, his first earned run allowed with the Chiefs, on one hit over two innings as he struck out two. Max Almonte threw one shutout inning as he allowed two hits, walked one and struck out three. Yeison Medina earned his 11th save as he allowed one run on two hits over one inning while striking out two.
