PEORIA, IL (August 18, 2017) - 13 strikeouts and timely hitting by the Peoria Chiefs were enough to drop the Clinton LumberKings 2-1 on Friday night at Dozer Park. Gareth Morgan homered in his second straight game for Clinton (23-31, 54-67) but would be the only run the LumberKings could muster.
Anthony Shew started for Peoria (29-25, 59-64) and dominated over his 7.1 inning start. Shew (2-0) picked up his second win of the season against the LumberKings and set a new professional career-high for strikeouts in a single game with 11.
The Lumberkings tallied just one run on the night when Morgan lifted a solo home run just over the wall in left center field that briefly tied the game at one. The home run was Morgan's 14th of the season, the most on the team.
The Chiefs scored the game's first run against LumberKings starter Steven Ridings in the bottom of the second inning. The run was unearned and the only tally that Ridings allowed in a 5.2 inning outing.
Wyatt Mills followed Ridings out of the bullpen. In the bottom of the sixth inning, he struck out the first man he faced to strand a Chief runner at second.
Mills (0-1) then allowed the game's deciding run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dylan Carlson lined an RBI double into the right field corner to score Juan Yepez for what proved to be the game's deciding run.
Leland Tilley defended the lead for Peoria with 1.2 innings of work. Tilley earned his first save of the season for his time out.
