Cruz, Seijas combine on shutout

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs edged the Quad Cities River Bandits 1-0 for the series split on Monday afternoon. The Chiefs improved to 36-28 overall and are two games ahead of the River Bandits in the Western Division Wild Card race with six games remaining in the half.

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs edged the Quad Cities River Bandits 1-0 for the series split on Monday afternoon. The Chiefs improved to 36-28 overall and are two games ahead of the River Bandits in the Western Division Wild Card race with six games remaining in the half.

    The Chiefs only needed one hit to jump out to an early lead in the bottom of the first on River Bandits starter Jairo Solis. Irving Lopez drew a leadoff walk and Elehuris Montero tripled him home with one out for a 1-0 lead.
    Quad Cities threatened in the top of the fifth by loading the bases. Adrian Tovalin walked with one out and the River Bandits loaded the bases after Michael Papierski and Roman Garcia were hit by pitches. Chiefs starter Jesus Cruz got out of the jam on a weak ground ball in front of home plate for a for the force out.
    In the ninth inning, the River Bandits put the tying run on and the go ahead run on base. The River Bandits were down to their final out when Roman Garcia singled and Alfredo Angarita reached on an infield single to put the go-ahead run on. Reliever Alvaro Seijas got Cody Bohanek to bounc out to Montero at third to end the game.
    Cruz (1-1) earned the win throwing five scoreless innings allowing two hits with one walk and two strikeouts while hitting two batters. Seijas picked up the save throwing four scoreless innings allowing five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
