Chirinos Earns July Player of the Month Award

Chirinos led the Carolina League in average, on-base, slugging and OPS in July

ZEBULON, N.C. – Minor League Baseball™ (MiLB™) today announced that Carolina Mudcats infielder Jesus Chirinos was selected as the Carolina League’s Player of the Month for July. Chirinos batted .429/.580/.653 and led the league in average (.429), on-base percentage (.580), slugging percentage (.653) and OPS (1.233) in the month of July.

Chirinos, 22, played in 17 games in July and hit safely in all but one game while totaling separate hit streaks of seven and nine games (setting a new career high). Chirinos also walked three times in the lone game he did not record a hit last month while reaching base safely in all 17 games played. Chirinos walked (18) more times than he struck out (16) in July and scored 13 runs while driving in 11.

Overall, Chirinos went 21-for-49 over his 17 games in July with five multi-hit games including a two-hit performance that saw him homer and drive in three runs on July 19 versus Kannapolis. He also homered the day prior on July 18 as his two home runs last month came on consecutive days.

The Milwaukee Brewers signed Chirinos as an international free agent out of Bachaquero, Venezuela, on July 30, 2017. Chirinos first played for the Mudcats in 2022 where he totaled team highs in games (117), runs (60), hits (96) and walks (69). Chirinos started the 2023 season with High-A Wisconsin before returning to Carolina on May 15, 2023.

Chirinos is the first Mudcats player this season to be honored by MiLB with a league Player of the Month award. He is also the first Mudcats player earn a league Player of the Month award since the 2021 season when Felix Valerio was named the Low-A East Player of the Month for June 2021.

The Mudcats are currently in first-place in the Carolina League North second half standings. Carolina's next homestand begins on Tuesday, August 8 with six games versus the Delmarva Shorebirds at Five County Stadium.
