The Chukars are back to their winning ways. Idaho Falls snapped a four-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory against Helena, the Chukars' first win against a North Division foe.
For the first time since July 7th, Idaho Falls held its opponent scoreless in the first inning. However, Helena got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second. The Brewers led 2-0 after four innings.
Left-handed pitcher Holden Capps made his first appearance and start for the Chukars, and was masterful. He went 5 innings, allowed 2 runs (both unearned) on 4 hits, and struck out 6 hitters with only one walk issued.
Capps struck out the side in the third and fanned the first two batters in the fourth for five consecutive punch-outs, en route to a second straight 1-2-3 frame.
"Honestly, that was probably the best I've thrown in two innings consecutively," said Capps, the Kansas City Royals' 8th-round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft. "I was able to throw the ball where I wanted to and I threw my slider well. That gave me a chance to be successful."
Darrell Miller, Jr. was back in the lineup for the Chukars for the first time since July 2nd. He went 1-4 with an infield single and has a at least one hit in all eight games that he has played in.
In the fifth inning, Idaho Falls tacked on a run via a fielder's choice RBI from Julio Gonzalez. Then, the Chukars sent nine men to the plate in the sixth inning. They worked five walks and scored five runs, which included 2-run singles from both Cristhian Vasquez and Gonzalez in back-to-back at-bats to make it a 6-2 game.
The Chukars added an insurance run in the eighth inning, when
Christopher Marte was the lone reliever for Idaho Falls and picked up his second win of the season (2-2). He pitched four scoreless innings and allowed just one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts.
"They got ahead, changed speeds, and worked fast," said Chukars' pitching coach Jeff Suppan of his two pitchers. "They did a really good job."
Tyler Straub increased his hitting streak to six games, while Vance Vizcaino's streak was snapped at 12. Both teams had five hits and left six men on base. Helena played a clean game in the field while the Chukars committed two errors (both charged to Straub).
Idaho Falls drew a season-high ten walks. The Chukars are now 10-14 on the year and 5-7 at home, the same record that they have on the road.
The game lasted 2 hours and 58 minutes before a crowd of 3,111, the second highest crowd of the season at Melaleuca Field. The Chukars are now less than 34,000 spectators away from the one-million fan mark in the ballpark's history, in its' 11th season.
