Clinton, IA (April 19, 2018) - Nine walks by Clinton LumberKings pitching on Thursday night at Ashford University Field were overcome in a 5-3 win against the Burlington Bees. Ryan Scott led the offense for the LumberKings (7-3) going 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored.
Clinton led throughout the game. The LumberKings tagged Bees (4-5) starter Isaac Mattson for two runs in the bottom of the first and would not relinquish the lead. Louis Boyd led off the inning with a walk and scored three batters later on an RBI single form Jack Larsen. Ariel Sandoval scored the second run of the game for Clinton when Johnny Adams lifted a sacrifice fly off Mattson (1-1) for the second run of the inning.
The Bees looked to strike early off LumberKings starter Ryne Inman. In the top of the first, Burlington worked three walks but failed to score in the inning, leaving the bases loaded.
In the second inning, the Bees worked another two walks but again failed to score a run. Inman lasted just three innings for Clinton, the shortest start of the season thus far, and despite issuing five walks did not allow a run.
Clay Chandler followed Inman and threw four strong innings to earn his first win of the season. He held the Bees to just one run during his time out, scattering three hits, walking two, and striking out five.
Chandler (1-0) did allow Burlingoton's first run of the night in the top of the fifth inning. A two out double by Brandon Marsh and then two-out single by Franklin Torres pulled the Bees to within one, 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the LumberKings pulled away for good. Boyd collected the big hit of the night floating a bases loaded single into center field that cleared the bases and extended the LumberKings lead to 5-1.
David Gerber worked the final two innings for Clinton and worked around a two-run Bees rally in the top of the ninth inning to preserve the win.
The LumberKings will continue their homestand with the first game of a three-game set with the Beloit Snappers on Friday night. Clinton will give the ball to left-hander Nick Wells (1-0, 4.82) while the Snappers will tap righty Waytt Marks (2-0, 1.80). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM. Fans looking to listen to the call can hear Erik Oas at 6:15 PM with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI.
