Clinton, IA (July 28, 2018) - Clinton LumberKings all-star Collin Kober has earned a promotion to the High-A Modesto Nuts of the California League. In Conjunction with the Seattle Mariners, the LumberKings will also be assigning left-handed pitcher Steven Moyers to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers and receiving right-handed pitchers Joey Gerber and Devin Sweet.
Kober, 23, was one of four all-stars this season for the LumberKings and was one of the most effective arms to come out of Clinton's bullpen. At the time of his promotion he was tied for the team lead in saves, seven, and owned the lowest ERA on the team, 1.93. Over 27 appearances with the LumberKings he went 5-0 logging 46.2 innings while walking just 12 and striking out 64.
Moyers promotion to the Tacoma Rainiers is not meant to last long but rather to plug a gap in a pitching staff that has been dealing with injuries.
In conjoining moves, the LumberKings will receive a pair of right-handed arms that will come out of the bullpen. Sweet, 22, comes to Clinton after making his professional debut with the AZL Mariners with three bullpen appearances. The Mariners signed him a non-drafted free agent out of North Carolina Central. During his final year in college, he went 5-4 with a 4.54 ERA over 16 outings and 85.1 innings of work.
Gerber, 21, comes to Clinton from the Everett AquaSox where he made his professional career debut on June 16th. He helped the AquaSox to a first half division title in the Northwest League. Gerber posted a 1-0 record to go with a 1.93 ERA over his 13 appearances in Everett. The Mariners selected him in the eighth round of the 2018 draft out of Illinois University.
The LumberKings are back home Saturday night to open a four-game series and homestand with the Peoria Chiefs. Clinton will throw right-hander Scott Boches (2-2, 2.84) while the Chiefs will tap righty Alex Fagalde (5-3, 1.79). Game time is slated for 6:30 PM (CDT). Fans looking to listen to the game can hear Erik Oas on the call on 100.3 FM WCCI and online at lumberkings.com via the tunein radio ap at 6:15 PM with the pregame show.
