FRISCO, Texas (May 16, 2017) - The Texas Rangers announced Tuesday that Frisco RoughRiders righthander Collin Wiles has been named the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April.
Wiles, 22, went 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA in five games (four starts) with the Riders during the season's first month. The righty, in his first year with the Riders, walked just three hitters while striking out 21.
Including his three starts in May, Wiles has been one of the most reliable arms in the Frisco rotation this season. Entering play tonight, he has a 3-1 record and a 2.62 ERA, and has turned in a quality start in each of his last five outings. With just five walks in 43 2/3 innings, Wiles leads Texas League starting pitchers in fewest walks per nine innings (1.03). He also ranks on the league leaderboard in ERA (9th, 2.62) and innings (5th, 44 2/3).
Wiles was selected by the Rangers in the supplemental first round (53rd overall) in the 2012 draft out of Blue Valley West High School (Overland Park, Kansas). He is the 16th pitcher in Riders history to win a Minor League Pitcher of the Month award and the first since Victor Payano earned the honor last June.
The RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Rangers, continue their eight-game homestand tonight at 7:05 p.m. against the Midland RockHounds (Oakland A's) at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
Tonight's game is another Taco Tuesday, featuring $2 tacos all game long plus half-price margaritas and select $3 beers from 6-8 p.m. Tickets to tonight's game, other remaining regular-season games and the 2017 Texas League All-Star Game on June 27 at Dr Pepper Ballpark are available at RidersBaseball.com or by calling (972) 731-9200.
About the RoughRiders
The Frisco RoughRiders are the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers and play their games at beautiful Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas. The team was founded in 2003 and has finished first among all Double-A franchises in attendance in each of the last 12 seasons (2005-2016). In August 2014, the RoughRiders were purchased by an ownership group led by Chuck Greenberg. The new ownership group, together with the city of Frisco, has spearheaded numerous major franchise improvements over the past two seasons, investing nearly $8 million in a wide array of facility upgrades and improvements, including a new state-of-the-art HD video board, sound system, Bull Moose Saloon, InTouch Grille, Riders Outpost Team Store, and the newest and biggest creation, the 174-foot Choctaw Lazy River. The upgrades made prior to the 2015 season earned the Riders and the City of Frisco "Best Ballpark Renovation" of 2015 by Ballpark Digest. The same publication also honored the Choctaw Lazy River as the best ballpark improvement over $1 million for the 2016 season. More than 140 former RoughRiders players have gone on to play Major League Baseball, including All-Stars Chris Davis, Adrián González, Ian Kinsler, and Nelson Cruz, as well as current Rangers stars Elvis Andrus, Rougned Odor and Nomar Mazara.
