Hickory, NC- Caleb Bryan, Head Groundskeeper of the Crawdads, was named the 2026 Carolina League Groundskeeper of the Year.

The award was selected by Major League Baseball with nominations made by individuals across the industry, including field managers, who provide feedback through the season on the quality and condition of fields.

To fans, the work of Caleb and his team could be seen not only with the pristine condition of the grass but also with the extra details added for theme nights. For Goat-Karts weekend, the crew added in black and white racing stripes around the home plate circle. On Bigfoot Night, there was a silhouette in painted conditioner behind the plate, similar to the bowling pins added for Stay in Your Lane Night. He also regularly painted logos in the grass behind Homeplate and used conditioner to put the ‘Dads wordmark behind the mound.

The Crawdads coaching staff and Rangers organization have been extremely complimentary of Caleb as well, citing what a joy he has been to work with his professionalism and field conditions.

Crawdads manager Nick Janssen praised the groundskeeper: “Caleb's dedication to his craft and attention to detail not only separate how well the field looks on a day-to-day/series-to-series basis, but the way in which he works with the coaches to make sure what we need on the field is taken care of is next level. He is truly one of the best in the business and it has been a pleasure to work with him and his staff this season.”

Visiting coaches also offered praise during the season, some citing that the LP Frans Stadium field was “one of the best playing surfaces in the league”.

Outside of the field responsibilities, Caleb is always eager to help out in whatever ways he can. After a major snow and ice storm, Caleb was the first staff member back at the stadium, shoveling paths on the concourse and help plow the parking lot. Following tough stretches of tarp or other grueling parts of the season, Caleb has shown his appreciation for staff that’s helped on grounds with handwritten notes or bringing the staff treats like donuts.

“Caleb’s attention to detail and knowledge of his craft are second to none,” Crawdads General Manager Douglas Locascio said. “This award is well-deserved and we are truly blessed to have him on our staff.”

Caleb will be honored with a pre-game trophy presentation before a game in 2027.
