RVA- The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, are excited to announce that former Cy Young & M.V.P. Award-winner Denny McLain will make a celebrity appearance at The Diamond on Tuesday, August 29. McLain is famously the last pitcher to win 30 games in a single Major League season, winning 31 in 1968 for the World Series champion Detroit Tigers. McLain will sign autographs on the concourse during the game and will have media availability starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Gates for Tuesday's game will open at 5:30 p.m.
"We are excited about all of the great promotions we will have during our final homestand and having the last 30-game winner in Major League Baseball is certainly one of them," Flying Squirrels VP & COO Todd "Parney' Parnell proclaimed of McLain's arrival.
About McLain
McLain became the last pitcher to win 30 games in one Major League season, winning 31 regular season contests in 1968 with the Detroit Tigers. McLain won an additional game in the World Series that season, helping guide the Tigers to the championship over Bob Gibson's St. Louis Cardinals. McLain took home his first of two consecutive Cy young awards in 1968 as well as the Most Valuable Player Award. He is the only player in baseball history to unanimously win the M.V.P. and Cy Young Award in the same season.
McLain, 73, made his MLB debut on September 21, 1963 and pitched for 10 seasons in the Majors, primarily with Detroit. He posted a career record of 131-91 with a 3.39 ERA and 19.7 WAR over 280 games. In his two Cy Young campaigns, McLain led the American League in starts (41, 41), wins (31, 24), and innings pitched (336 & 325). He pitched for the Tigers from 1963-1970 and traded to the Washington Senators following the 1970 season. McLain concluded his career in Atlanta after the 1972 season.
