Trey Cabbage began the scoring with a solo home run for the Kernels (20-20) in the top of the second. In the third, Jean Carlos Arias hit a one-out triple. The relay throw by Cougar (21-20) shortstop Yan Sanchez escaped into the third base dugout, scoring Arias. After an infield single and walk, Jose Miranda made it 4-0 Kernels with an RBI triple. The next batter, Ben Rortvedt, roped an RBI single to make it 5-0. Trey Cabbage capped the five-run inning with a sacrifice fly.
In the Cougars' third inning, Jancarlos Cintron doubled to start the frame. After a walk, Yan Sanchez drove in a run with a double. Yoel Yanqui followed with an RBI ground out. With two aboard and the Cougars trailing 6-2, Eduardo Diaz smacked his first home run of the season to trim the Kernels' lead to 6-5. In the fifth, Diaz tripled with one out and tied the game when he scored on a wild pitch. In the top of the sixth, Arias gave the Kernels the lead again with an RBI single, making it 7-6.
In the eighth, Ernie De La Trinidad led off with a double. He scored the tying run on Diaz's RBI triple. A few pitches later, Diaz scored the eventual winning run on a wild pitch.
Cougar starter Jeff Bain went 5.2 innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, four strikeouts and two walks. Juan Torres (1-0) earned his first Midwest League win with 1.1 shutout innings. Jordan Watson pitched a scoreless eighth. Matt Brill (5) hurled a scoreless ninth.
Cedar Rapids starter Tyler Watson tossed 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits. Jovani Moran (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on two hits. Calvin Faucher threw 1.1 scoreless innings.
