'Dogs rule in extra frames, 7-5 win at Reading

Reading, Pa. - The Portland Sea Dogs (1-4) got their first win historically on Tuesday night, holding on for a 7-5 win in 13 innings over the Reading Fightin Phils (2-4) at FirstEnergy Stadium. Portland and Reading played their first extra-inning game under the rules in team history.

When the game goes into extra-innings, the batter who made the previous out is placed at second base to start the frame.
Tied at three after nine innings, Tate Matheny (3-for-5) knocked in the first run of the extra-innings with a two-out single. Reading responded off Matt Kent, tying the game at four on Damek Tomscha's sacrifice fly.
Portland put the game away with a crazy 13th inning, scoring three runs off losing pitcher Garrett Cleavinger (0-1). The 'Dogs loaded the bases with two outs, but Cleavinger fanned the next two batters. Austin Rei drew a walk, Jeremy Rivera was hit by a pitch, and Cole Sturgeon walked. The Sea Dogs did not have a hit in the 13th but scored three runs.
Jake Cosart (1-0) allowed an unearned run in the 13th inning but worked three strong innings with four strikeouts to notch the victory.
Earlier in the game, Portland took a 2-0 lead in the fourth off Ranger Suárez. Matheny knocked home a run with a double and Jordan provided an RBI single. Reading took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning off Kevin McAvoy and Daniel McGrath, but Betts tied the game with a two-out hit in the eighth.
Portland's bullpen allowed one earned run over 7.2 innings with ten strikeouts. 
Portland and Reading wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday afternoon with a 1:15 PM start at FirstEnergy Stadium. RH Teddy Stankiewicz (0-1, 13.50) makes his second start of the season for Portland. Reading counters with right Harold Arauz (0-0, 0.00).
