Dombkowski Dominates ‘Wolves in 6-1 Win

CURVE, Pa. – Curve starter Nick Dombkowski retired 12 straight hitters to begin the game and helped Altoona cruise to a 6-1 win over the Erie SeaWolves on Wednesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

Altoona chased Erie starter Lucas Elissalt from the game after one inning, using an RBI single from Easton Carmichael to push his pitch count past 30 in the opening frame. The Curve scored three times in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Titus Dumitru and a two-run double from Carmichael to open a 4-0 lead. Jesus Castillo added an RBI single on a bunt attempt in the third to push Altoona to a 5-0 advantage.

Dombkowski had all the support he needed after one inning and ended up throwing six no-hit innings to begin the game. In the fifth inning, Erie’s Thayron Liranzo reached on a throwing error by Curve 3B Murf Gray to account for Erie’s first baserunner. Liranzo was quickly erased on an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play that finished the fifth inning at just 53 pitches for the Curve starter.

Dombkowski fired a 1-2-3 sixth inning and picked up his sixth strikeout on his way to finish his outing. Dombkowski recorded the longest no-hit bid by a Curve pitcher since Roansy Contreras tossed six no-hit innings on May 11, 2021.

Erie broke the combined no-hit bid in the seventh on a clean single to left field by Woody Hadeen off Jarod Bayless. Bayless tossed two innings of relief and was touched for a run in the eighth inning, a run the Curve immediately got back in the bottom of the eighth on a solo homer from Will Taylor.

Sean Sullivan tossed a third scoreless inning in relief since re-joining the club on August 19.

Easton Carmichael paced the Curve offense with two hits and three runs batted in. Camden Janik picked up two hits in his Double-A debut, earning a single in each of his first two at-bats. Jesus Castillo also recorded two hits in the win; Curve hitters picked up six runs on ten hits and drew four walks. Curve pitchers did not issue a walk in the 6-1 win.

Altoona continues their series with Erie on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. LHP Connor Oliver will start on the mound for the Curve with RHP Max Alba slated to start for Erie.
