Binghamton and Somerset did not play at all during the 2021 season, the Patriots first as a Double-A affiliate. The two teams met earlier this season in a six-game series at Mirabito Stadium between May 30 to June 5 that was split evenly at three games each.

The Subway Series, a name that denotes the close proximity between the two MLB franchises, has been played for over 24 years with the Yankees currently holding an 80-59 all-time record. The Yankees and Mets also met in the 2000 World Series with the Bronx Bombers winning the championship in six games.

Binghamton brings a duo of top-five prospects to Bridgewater in No. 2 prospect 3B/OF Brett Baty and No. 3 prospect INF Ronny Mauricio to rival Somerset’s trio of SS Anthony Volpe (No. 1), C Austin Wells (No. 4) and OF Everson Pereira (No. 10).

Baty, also MLB Pipeline’s No. 21 prospect, was picked 12th overall out of Lake Travis High School by the Mets in the 2019 draft. He has since navigated through the Rookie League as well as Low-A St. Lucie and High-A Brooklyn before being assigned to Double-A Binghamton in 2022. Amongst active players on the roster, Baty ranks first in hits (85), walks (39), batting average (.292), slugging (.491) and OPS (.878).

Between July 12 to July 24, the 22-year-old recorded an eight-game hit streak and batted 14-for-31 (.452) with two home runs and six RBI.

Next to Baty in the infield is Mauricio, a former minor league signing in 2017 that has since blossomed into MLB Pipeline’s No. 53 prospect. A two-time MiLB.com Organizational All-Star, Mauricio leads active players on the roster in home runs (16), extra-base hits (36), RBI (55) and stolen bases (11). The Dominican Republic-native found his stride in the month of June in which he slashed .263/.303/.545 with eight home runs and 24 RBI.

On the home side, Volpe enters the series in the midst of the best month of his season so far with a .302/.415/.566 slash line along with three home runs and five RBI. The 21-year-old's season has garnered national attention with a selection to the 2022 Futures Game on July 16 along with two other Yankees prospects, OF Jasson Dominguez (No. 3) and LHP Ken Waldichuk (No. 5).

Volpe was also reunited with his former teammates Wells and Pereira as the duo was promoted to Double-A Somerset in early July. Currently on a nine-game hit streak, Wells has caught fire at the plate having batted 14-for-39 (.359) with a homer and three RBI in that span.

On July 24, Pereira drilled a solo home run before Wells slammed a two-run home run in back-to-back at-bats to lift the Patriots over the Reading Fightin Phils (Philadelphia Phillies) 7-4 at TD Bank Ballpark. It was the pair’s first Double-A home runs.
