Down East Rides Out Another Hot Start in Win Over the Dash

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - For the second straight game, the Wood Ducks (20-16) jumped out to an early lead against the Dash (20-16) and never relinquished it to win 7-5. Andretty Cordero had his team-leading 12th multi-hit game with a pair of RBIs in the victory.
Down East also received another strong performance from left-hander Christian Torres. Saturday was his third straight start of at least five innings and two or fewer runs allowed. He claimed his third win of the season for his record.

The Woodies jumped out to a five-run lead through two innings, thanks to two runs driven in by Brendon Davis and executing situational hitting. Twice the Woodies put the ball in play with the infield back and less than two outs for RBI groundouts - Davis and Leody Taveras.
Eric Jenkins also reached base three times in five plate appearances and added an RBI ground-rule double deep to right field.
Torres also built on his previous start against the Dash with seven strikeouts - a new season-high. Saturday was also the third straight game the Wood Ducks won he started.
The offense went quiet until the sixth, when a two-out rally formed after a walk to Chuck Leblanc with Brendon Davis on third (who doubled). Cordero managed to hit a two-run single to center with a 1-2 count and push the Woodies lead to 7-1.
After the Dash tightened the game up to 7-4 in the seventh, Locke St. John registered his league-leading fifth hold of the season with a pair of K's over two innings.
In the ninth, C.D. Pelham converted his fifth save in as many chances by striking out Zach Remillard as the winning run. 
Down East has now won four of its last five series and has won five games in a row for the second time this season. They move into a tie for second with the Winston-Salem and two games back of Buies Creek in the first-half race.
The finale of the series comes on Sunday with right-hander Emerson Martinez on the mound against lefty Bernardo Flores at 2:00 p.m.
